A Figure's Falling Rest explores how clay's inherent qualities can reflect the human experience through figurative sculpture. My work encompasses various levels of representation. Some figures emerge meticulously rendered, while others are fleeting impressions capturing transient yet familiar features. This particular sculpture stemmed from pure imagination, sculpted without a preconceived plan or armature. I followed the shadows my touch impressed upon the clay, seeking a person within its formless depths. This focus on expressive marks birthed tension and movement across the surface. Intending to refine it further, I left the piece overnight. However, something unexpected happened. The clay, guided by its own inherent properties, fell, creating a unique moment. The portrait, frozen in peaceful expression, now bears the weight of the material gracefully settling into its own repose.
